What’s on in Edinburgh in September?

August 31, 2012 Posted in: Blog

August is coming to an end and that means the end of the festival. Every day routines are returning to the city, but if you we’re thinking there’s nothing going on anymore; you were wrong! Vibrant as the Scottish capital is, there is always something to do.  Although officially the fireworks concert marks the end of the August festival month, we would like to think it marks the start of beautiful September. September has something to offer for everyone.

To start of off course the fireworks concert in the Princess street gardens. Allthough tickets are not expensive, vantage points can be found around the city, from up close on Princes Street or Castle Street to Calton Hill. Inverleith Park’s free Family Viewing Area is also popular, not just for its great views of the castle, but also the fact that there is a live video link sound system to capture the Concert in the Gardens that accompanies the fireworks display.

On the festival radar this time round is the Edinburgh Mela, that takes place at Leith Links from the 31st of August till the 2nd of September. This mini-festival celebrates the city’s rich ethnic diversity and features music, dance and theatre, as well as food and fashion, and there are plenty of children-friendly activities too.

From the 28th of August till the 9th of September you can watch the Paralympics Live at Festival Square. Screens are erected to show a selection of all sports Live every day.

On Sunday the 16th you can enjoy EH1 Live, a music festival held over 5 different locations in the city displaying some real Scottish musical talent.

From the 22nd till the 23rd it is Doors Open Day again. This is your chance to explore some of Edinburgh’s most architecturally, culturally and socially significant buildings. Most venues feature behind the scenes tours, activities, exhibitions and/or talks which bring the history of the building, garden, cemetery or monument and its everyday use to life. Many sites organise additional free activities for children and families.

Something for every weekend as you can see!
